Creative Process – Handmade Ceramic Sculpture Process

Introduction

Welcome to the handmade ceramic sculpture process of Dorienne Carmel, an award-winning UK ceramic artist.

In this behind-the-scenes look, you’ll explore how Dorienne combines clay and natural materials to create her unique ceramic sculptures by hand.

Where the Sculpture Begins

Each sculpture starts with an idea or loose sketch.

Dorienne shapes the clay using traditional hand-building techniques such as pinching, coiling, and slab work.

Her work is spontaneous and expressive, often guided by the character of the clay itself.

Incorporating Natural and Found Materials

Dorienne frequently includes driftwood, pinecones, wire, and other found materials in her work.

These elements bring individuality, charm, and environmental awareness to each piece. No two sculptures are ever alike.

Glazing and Kiln Firing

Each piece undergoes multiple firings in the kiln, using either stoneware or earthenware.

The glazing process creates rich colour, tactile texture, and durability. This careful attention to finishing results in vibrant, lasting works of art.

Original and Expressive Creations

Every sculpture is handmade from start to finish. No moulds, no duplicates — just pure craftsmanship.
